Habitats of the Upper Main

Water is the defining element in the floodplain – when the habitats are more ecologically sound, there is an immense vitality and constant change. Floods bring organic material, the power of the river causes the shoreline to rise and fall, and groundwater ensures that quarry ponds are replenish. The transitions between dry, moist and wet are continuously in fluctuation. Animals and plants have adapted themselves to these cycles.
